I've done many Himalayan treks in India but the Khumbu region is something else entirely. Better infrastructure, more dramatic views, extraordinary Sherpa cultural richness. Guide Kami somehow organized a birthday cake at 4,410m — where he sourced it I'll never know — and the entire tea house of trekkers from eight countries sang for me. That memory alone justifies the entire trip. The trek itself was extraordinary — the Hillary Bridge, Tengboche, the Khumbu Glacier, Kala Patthar sunrise. Five stars is genuinely not enough.

The Lukla flight alone is worth the trip. Nothing prepares you for that 20-minute flight banking between Himalayan peaks and landing on that tiny uphill runway with a cliff at the end. Then you step out and the Himalayas are just everywhere. 14 days later at Kala Patthar watching Everest in the dawn light, I understood why people dedicate their lives to these mountains. I'm an architect and I kept thinking about the structures of the Khumbu — the stone walls, the stupa architecture, the suspension bridges, the tea houses built at 5,000m by people carrying everything by hand and yak. Then Kala Patthar at dawn — the greatest natural architecture on Earth.
