About Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar sits at 3,440 metres inside a natural amphitheatre carved into the mountainside, and it is the heart of life in the Khumbu. For centuries, Sherpa traders carried salt, grain and goods across the high passes between Tibet and Nepal, and Namche grew into the region’s marketplace. Today it is where every Everest trek slows down, stocks up and prepares for the high Himalaya.

The climb to Namche
The approach is one of the trek’s great moments. After crossing the high suspension bridges above the Dudh Koshi, including the famous Hillary Bridge, the trail climbs steeply through pine forest. If the weather is clear, this is where trekkers catch their first glimpse of Everest, framed between ridges. Then the stone-walled town appears, stacked in terraces above you.

Life in town
Namche is surprisingly well equipped for its altitude. You’ll find bakeries with fresh pastries and coffee, lodges with views, trekking gear shops, money exchange and ATMs, and pharmacies. The lively Saturday market draws traders and villagers from the surrounding valleys, and it is a good place to see local life up close.

Acclimatization day
Nearly every itinerary includes two nights here. The golden rule is “climb high, sleep low”. Use the rest day for a gentle hike to the Everest View Hotel (about 3,880 m) for sweeping views of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, or visit the villages of Khumjung and Khunde. Return to Namche to sleep, which helps your body adjust.

Culture and museums
The Sagarmatha National Park Visitor Centre, on a hillside above town, introduces the park’s wildlife, geology and Sherpa heritage. In Khumjung, the Hillary School and the monastery give a window into local life and traditions.

Practical tips
Stock up on cash, gloves, sunscreen and any forgotten gear before heading higher, since Namche is the last big shopping stop. Drink 3 to 4 litres of water daily, walk slowly and rest often. Altitude affects everyone differently, so listen to your body and to your guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the altitude of Namche Bazaar?

3,440 metres (about 11,286 feet). It is the first place on the Everest trek where altitude becomes a real factor.

Why do trekkers stay two nights in Namche?

For acclimatization. A rest day with a short hike to higher ground and a return to sleep lower helps your body adjust and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.

How long is the walk from Lukla to Namche Bazaar?

Usually two days, with an overnight in Phakding. The last stretch from Jorsale is a steep climb of about 2 to 3 hours.

When is the Namche Saturday market?

Every Saturday, from morning to early afternoon. Vendors bring vegetables, goods and crafts from surrounding villages.

Can I get an ATM, WiFi and gear in Namche?

Yes. Namche has ATMs, money exchange, gear shops, bakeries and paid WiFi, though cash is still best and availability can vary.

Can I see Everest from Namche Bazaar?

Everest is not clearly visible from the town itself, but a short hike to the Everest View Hotel area offers a superb view on a clear morning.

Is Namche Bazaar suitable for beginners?

Yes, with reasonable fitness. The climb into town is steep, but the paths are well maintained and lodges are plentiful.
