The trek is physically demanding, the tea houses are basic above 4,000m, and the altitude is very real — but none of that matters when you're at Kala Patthar watching the most spectacular sunrise on the planet. I was terrified by altitude sickness before going — read everything and scared myself. In reality the acclimatization was well-managed, the guide was constantly monitoring everyone, and the pace was conservative enough that I never felt out of control. Day 9 to Base Camp is genuinely hard but manageable with the right support. Standing at EBC I felt both tiny and enormous simultaneously.

The tea house food was much better than expected — dal bhat, garlic soup, apple pies in Namche. What I wasn't ready for was how culturally moving the whole experience would be.
