About Phakding
Phakding (2,610 m) is a riverside village on the Dudh Koshi and the first overnight stop for most trekkers heading into the Everest region. It lies about three hours’ walk from Lukla, a little lower than the airstrip, which makes it a gentle place to start adjusting to altitude.
The walk from Lukla
After landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport, the trail leaves Lukla through a stone gate and heads gently downhill past Chheplung, small farms, mani stones and prayer wheels. You cross the Dudh Koshi on your first suspension bridge and follow the milky river to Phakding.
Things to do
In the afternoon you can visit Rimishung Monastery on the hillside above the village, or Pemachholing Monastery across the river. Otherwise, relax in a riverside teahouse — tomorrow’s climb to Namche Bazaar is a big one.
Practical tips
Phakding has comfortable lodges, many with attached bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi and bakeries. Mobile signal is usually good. It is a good last chance to buy small items before Namche.
