Teahouses, Lodges and Where to Stay in Nepal: 2026 Guide

From family-run teahouses on the Everest and Annapurna trails to hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara — what to expect, what it costs and how to choose.

What Is Teahouse Trekking in Nepal?

The way most people trek the Himalaya

A teahouse is a small, family-run lodge on a trekking route where you sleep and eat each night. Teahouse trekking means you carry only a daypack (or use a porter), walk from village to village and stay in a warm lodge instead of a tent. It is the standard way to trek in the Everest, Annapurna and Langtang regions, and it brings you close to local Sherpa, Gurung and Tamang families.

See a real example on the Everest route: Phakding Lodge, the first night’s stop after flying into Lukla.

Rooms, Food and Facilities

What to expect in a Himalayan teahouse

  • Rooms: usually twin rooms with beds, a mattress, pillow and blanket. Lower villages often have attached bathrooms; higher up, toilets are usually shared.
  • Dining room: the heart of the lodge, heated by a stove in the evening — the warmest place to relax.
  • Food: dal bhat (refillable rice and lentils), noodles, soups, fried rice, potatoes, eggs, porridge, pancakes and Tibetan bread.
  • Hot showers, charging and Wi-Fi: widely available but often charged extra, and less reliable at higher altitude.
  • Heating: bedrooms are unheated, so bring a warm sleeping bag for nights above 3,500 m.

Teahouses on the Everest Base Camp Trek

From Lukla to Gorak Shep

  • Phakding and Namche Bazaar: the most comfortable lodges, with attached bathrooms, bakeries and good Wi-Fi in Namche.
  • Tengboche, Dingboche and Lobuche: simpler lodges with shared toilets and fewer facilities as you climb.
  • Gorak Shep: the last stop before Everest Base Camp — basic, cold and busy in peak season.
  • Luxury options: a few upscale lodges operate on the lower route, and Hotel Everest View is famous for its Everest breakfast terrace.

Teahouse nights are included on our Everest Base Camp Trek. Explore the route on our Everest region guide.

Teahouses on Annapurna Treks

Villages and lodges in the Annapurna region

The Annapurna region has some of Nepal’s best-developed teahouses. On the Annapurna Base Camp Trek you’ll stay in villages such as Ghandruk and Chhomrong, then simpler lodges at Bamboo, Deurali, Machapuchare Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp itself. Lodges in the sanctuary are basic and can fill up quickly in October.

Where to Stay in Kathmandu and Pokhara

Best areas before and after your trek

  • Thamel, Kathmandu: the backpacker and trekker hub, full of hotels, gear shops and restaurants — 30 minutes from the airport.
  • Boudha, Kathmandu: peaceful guesthouses around the great stupa, close to the airport.
  • Patan: boutique heritage hotels for a quieter cultural stay.
  • Lakeside, Pokhara: hotels along Phewa Lake with mountain views, cafés and the start of Annapurna treks.

Teahouse Costs and Tips

Budget and comfort advice

  • Rooms are cheap, meals are not: lodges keep room rates low and expect you to eat where you sleep. Food prices rise with altitude because supplies are carried up by porters or yaks.
  • Budget for extras: hot showers, charging, Wi-Fi, bottled or boiled water and snacks.
  • Carry cash: most teahouses accept Nepali rupees only, and there are few ATMs above Namche Bazaar.
  • Book early in peak season: in October, November, April and May popular lodges fill up — guided treks reserve rooms for you.
  • Bring a sleeping bag and earplugs: walls are thin and nights are cold.
