Overview

Three days in Kathmandu is enough to see the whole valley properly: all three royal cities, the great stupas and temples, a village where the Himalaya fills the horizon, and plenty of Newari food in between. It is the length we recommend for anyone who wants Kathmandu to be more than a stopover. If you have less time, see our 1 day in Kathmandu itinerary or our 2 days in Kathmandu itinerary.

How this 3-day Kathmandu itinerary works

The valley holds three ancient royal cities, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, and seven UNESCO-listed monument zones. This plan gives each city its own day and matches every afternoon to the right sunset:

  • Day 1, Kathmandu: Swayambhunath at sunrise, Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old bazaars, the Garden of Dreams and Thamel.
  • Day 2, Patan and the east: Patan Durbar Square and museum, Boudhanath stupa, and the aarati at Pashupatinath.
  • Day 3, Bhaktapur and the hills: Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur’s three squares and pottery lanes, then sunset over the Himalaya from Nagarkot.

Prefer mountains to temples on day three? Swap it for an Everest Base Camp helicopter tour, which lands near Everest Base Camp and has you back in Kathmandu by lunchtime.

Why three days works so well

With one or two days you have to choose between Patan and Bhaktapur. With three you see both, and you see them at the right time of day: Patan in the quiet morning, Bhaktapur before the day-trippers arrive. You also get one evening away from the city, watching peaks such as Langtang, Dorje Lakpa and on clear days Everest catch the last light from Nagarkot ridge.

Who this itinerary suits

It suits first-time visitors to Nepal, families, photographers and anyone with time before or after a trek. Walking is easy, distances are short, and a private driver handles the traffic. Many of our guests do it straight after the Everest Base Camp Trek, when they finally have time to enjoy the city.

Before you go

Read our Kathmandu Airport arrival guide and book a private airport transfer to Thamel for when you land. Pick up a local SIM on day one (see our SIM card guide for Nepal). Carry cash for tickets, wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and walk clockwise around stupas. If you are continuing to Pokhara or the mountains, leave the evening of day three free to pack.

Getting around for three days

A private taxi with driver for each day is the easiest and usually the cheapest option for two or more people. Day three covers the most distance, so book a full-day car hire with driver for Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur and Nagarkot. Thamel to Kathmandu Durbar Square is a short, rewarding walk.

3 Days plan

🗓 3 Days✨ Culture & Heritage📍 Kathmandu📍 Nepal

Day 1Day 1: Old Kathmandu, Monkey Temple and Thamel

Ease into the city: sunrise over the valley from Swayambhunath, the royal Durbar Square, the old trading lanes and a first evening in Thamel.

  1. Morning

    Sunrise at Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)

Leave Thamel at about 5:45 and climb the 365 steps to the white stupa as the city wakes. Watch pilgrims spin the prayer wheels and light butter lamps, walk the stupa clockwise, and take in the view across the valley. On a clear morning in autumn you can see snow peaks to the north. Return for breakfast around 7:45.

💡 Tip: Hide food and sunglasses. The monkeys are quick.
🎟️ Book this part of your day
  2. Morning (late)

    Kathmandu Durbar Square

Arrive by 9:30. See the Kumari Ghar, home of the living goddess, the rebuilt Kasthamandap pavilion that gave Kathmandu its name, the Taleju Temple and the Hanuman Dhoka palace courtyards. Our guide to Basantapur and Kathmandu Durbar Square covers the history in more detail.

💡 Tip: Photos of the Kumari are not allowed. Bring your passport or a copy for the ticket.
  3. Afternoon

Asan, Indra Chowk and the Garden of Dreams

After a Newari lunch near the square, walk north through Indra Chowk and Asan, where spices, shawls, glass beads and brass pots fill tiny shopfronts and shrines sit in the middle of the street. End at the Garden of Dreams around 15:30 to rest in the shade with a coffee.

💡 Tip: The lanes are narrow and busy. Keep valuables in a front pocket.
  4. Evening

    Dinner in Thamel

Explore Thamel as the lights come on. Browse for pashmina, singing bowls and trekking gear, then have dal bhat or momos at a rooftop restaurant with live music.

💡 Tip: Bargain politely in shops. Restaurant prices are fixed.

Day 2Day 2: Patan, Boudhanath and the Pashupatinath Aarati

The royal city of Patan in the quiet morning, Tibetan Buddhist life at Boudhanath, and the evening fire ceremony on the Bagmati River.

  1. Morning

Patan Durbar Square, Patan Museum and the Golden Temple

Drive 25–30 minutes to Patan and arrive by 8:30. Admire the stone Krishna Mandir, Bhimsen Temple and the carved royal baths, then spend an hour in the Patan Museum, the best introduction to Nepali art you will find. Finish at the gilded Golden Temple (Kwa Bahal) a few minutes' walk north. Booking Kathmandu sightseeing by private car keeps the day simple.

💡 Tip: Remove shoes and leather before entering the Golden Temple.
🎟️ Book this part of your day
  2. Afternoon

    Lunch in Patan, then Boudhanath

Have a Newari khaja set in a Patan courtyard, then drive to Boudhanath. Walk the kora clockwise with pilgrims and monks, visit a monastery to hear the afternoon chanting, and watch the stupa from a rooftop café.

💡 Tip: Try thukpa (noodle soup) or butter tea around Boudhanath.
  3. Evening

    Pashupatinath aarati

Pashupatinath is 10–15 minutes from Boudhanath. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset, walk the riverbank and ghats, and sit on the steps across the Bagmati for the aarati: fire lamps, bells and chanting as darkness falls.

💡 Tip: Cremations take place here. Be respectful and do not photograph mourners.
🎟️ Book this part of your day

Day 3Day 3: Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur and Sunset at Nagarkot

The valley's oldest temple, the best-preserved medieval city in Nepal, and a sunset over the Himalaya from Nagarkot ridge.

  1. Morning

    Changu Narayan Temple

Leave Thamel at 7:30 with your car hire with driver. Changu Narayan sits on a ridge about an hour east of Kathmandu and is considered the oldest temple in the valley, with stone inscriptions from the 5th century. The carvings of Vishnu and his avatars are some of the finest in Nepal, and the small village around it is quiet and friendly.

💡 Tip: There is a pleasant 2-hour trail down to Bhaktapur if you prefer to walk; your driver can meet you there.
🎟️ Book this part of your day
  2. Morning (late)

Bhaktapur: Durbar, Taumadhi and Pottery Squares

Reach Bhaktapur around 10:30. Its brick lanes, carved windows and squares feel like stepping back several centuries. See the 55-Window Palace and Golden Gate in Durbar Square, the five-tiered Nyatapola temple in Taumadhi Square, the potters shaping clay on wheels in Pottery Square, and the peacock window near Dattatreya Square.

💡 Tip: Keep your Bhaktapur ticket. It is checked at several entry points.
  3. Afternoon

Juju dhau and lunch in Bhaktapur

Lunch in a rooftop restaurant overlooking a square, then try juju dhau, Bhaktapur's famous sweet yoghurt served in a clay pot. Spend the afternoon wandering the back lanes, where you will see grain drying in courtyards and woodcarvers at work.

💡 Tip: Bhaktapur is quieter after 15:00 when tour groups leave.
  4. Evening

Sunset over the Himalaya from Nagarkot

Drive about 45 minutes up to Nagarkot (around 2,100 m) for sunset. On clear days you see a wide sweep of the Himalaya, from Langtang and Dorje Lakpa to the Everest range far to the east. Return to Kathmandu for dinner, or stay overnight for an even better sunrise.

💡 Tip: Views are clearest from October to April. In the monsoon, swap Nagarkot for more time in Bhaktapur.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3 days enough for Kathmandu?

Yes. Three days is enough to see Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, the major stupas and temples, and a Himalayan sunset from Nagarkot, all at a comfortable pace.

What is the best 3-day itinerary for Kathmandu?

Day 1: Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square, the old bazaars and Thamel. Day 2: Patan, Boudhanath and the Pashupatinath aarati. Day 3: Changu Narayan, Bhaktapur and sunset at Nagarkot.

Is Bhaktapur worth visiting?

Yes. Bhaktapur is the best-preserved of the three royal cities, with fewer cars, traditional craft workshops and some of Nepal's finest temples. Give it at least half a day.

Can I see Everest from Kathmandu in 3 days?

On a very clear day the Everest range is visible far to the east from Nagarkot. For a close-up view, replace day three with an Everest Base Camp helicopter tour or a mountain flight, both of which return to Kathmandu the same day.

How much do 3 days in Kathmandu cost?

Allow roughly USD 120–280 per person, excluding your hotel. That includes entry fees (about NPR 5,700 for all seven sites), meals and a car with driver shared by two. A licensed guide adds about USD 25–40 per day.

Should I stay overnight in Nagarkot?

Stay overnight if mountain views are a priority, because sunrise is usually clearer than sunset. Otherwise, a sunset visit and a 1–1.5 hour drive back to Kathmandu works well.

Where should I stay for 3 days in Kathmandu?

Thamel is the easiest base. For a quieter stay, Patan has heritage hotels in restored Newari houses, and Boudhanath has peaceful guesthouses around the stupa.

Can I combine this with a trek?

Yes. Do it before the Everest Base Camp Trek to adjust to the time zone, or afterwards as a relaxed finish. For a longer trip, continue to Pokhara and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Is Kathmandu safe for tourists?

Kathmandu is generally safe for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in crowded bazaars, use registered taxis or a pre-booked driver at night, and drink bottled or filtered water.
