Nobody ever mentions the food enough in these reviews. The dal bhat in the tea houses is genuinely delicious and the unlimited refills policy is one of the best things that exists at any altitude. The apple pies in Namche bakeries should be internationally famous. The garlic soup at Lobuche saved my soul on a cold evening when everything felt hard. And the farewell dinner in Kathmandu on Day 13 was perfect.

I turned 40 on Day 9 — at Everest Base Camp. My guide produced a chocolate cake from absolutely nowhere and the other trekkers sang happy birthday. I cried for about 10 minutes straight. Best birthday of my life, no question. The trek was beautifully organized, perfectly paced, and the mountain views were more spectacular than any photograph I'd ever seen.

Everything exceeded my expectations. The Sherpa culture alone is worth the journey — the prayer flags, the mani walls, the monasteries, the warmth of local people in every village. Kala Patthar at sunrise made me completely forget I was exhausted and freezing.
