About Khumjung
Khumjung (3,790 m) is one of the largest Sherpa villages in the Khumbu, set in a wide, green bowl below the sacred peak of Khumbila, just above Namche Bazaar. With its stone houses, potato fields and views of Ama Dablam and Thamserku, it gives a real feel for traditional Sherpa life. Most trekkers visit on their acclimatisation day in Namche.
The Hillary School and Khunde Hospital
In 1961 Sir Edmund Hillary built the Khumjung School here, the first school in the region, through his Himalayan Trust. Next door, in the twin village of Khunde, he later helped found Khunde Hospital, which still serves the local community and trekkers today.
Khumjung Monastery
The village monastery is known for keeping what is said to be a yeti scalp, shown to visitors for a small donation. The monastery was rebuilt after the 2015 earthquake and remains the spiritual centre of the village.
The acclimatisation walk
The classic loop climbs from Namche past Syangboche airstrip to the Everest View Hotel (3,880 m), where you can have a drink with a view of Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam, then drops into Khumjung and returns to Namche. It takes 3 to 4 hours and is an ideal way to follow the climb high, sleep low rule.

How high is Khumjung?
Khumjung is at about 3,790 m (12,430 ft), above Namche Bazaar and below the sacred peak of Khumbila.
How do I get to Khumjung from Namche?
It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours uphill, either directly or via the Everest View Hotel. Most trekkers do a 3 to 4 hour loop on their Namche acclimatisation day.
Is the yeti scalp in Khumjung real?
Scientific tests in the 1960s suggested it was made from the skin of a serow, a Himalayan goat-antelope. It is still an important and much-loved object for the monastery.
What is the Hillary School?
Khumjung School, founded by Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust in 1961, was the first school in the Khumbu and still educates local children today.
Can I see Everest from Khumjung?
Yes, from the Everest View Hotel and the trail above the village on a clear day, along with Lhotse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.
What is the difference between Khumjung and Khunde?
They are twin villages a short walk apart. Khunde is home to Khunde Hospital, also founded with Hillary's support.
Can I stay overnight in Khumjung?
Yes. Khumjung has a few lodges and is a quieter alternative to Namche for an acclimatisation night.
Is there an entry fee for Khumjung Monastery?
Visitors usually make a small donation to see the yeti scalp. Ask your guide about the current amount.
