Almost every Everest Base Camp trek starts with a flight to Lukla (Tenzing-Hillary Airport, 2,860 m). In the off-season, flights leave from Kathmandu’s domestic terminal and take about 30–35 minutes (about US$215–257 one way for foreign visitors). In the peak trekking seasons, Nepal’s aviation authority moves most Lukla flights to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport, a 4–5 hour drive from Kathmandu, to ease congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport. That means a 1–3 am pickup, a 15–20 minute flight and a strict 15 kg baggage limit. Flights only run in the morning and are often delayed by cloud or wind. This guide covers the Ramechhap rule and its 2026 dates, fares, baggage, delays, helicopter alternatives and how we plan your flight on our Everest treks.
Lukla Flight Cost 2026
| Route | Flight time | Fare (foreigners, one way) | Fare (Nepali / Indian citizens) | When it operates |

| Kathmandu → Ramechhap by road | 4–5 hours (132 km) | Shared jeep or private car, extra cost | Same | Peak seasons, early-morning departure |
| Shared helicopter Kathmandu → Lukla | About 45 minutes | About US$450–650 per seat | Same | Any season, weather allowing |
| Private helicopter charter | About 45 minutes | About US$2,200–3,000 (up to 5 people) | Same | Any season, weather allowing |
Typical 2026 fares; airlines change prices with season and fuel costs. A return ticket is simply two one-way fares. Our Everest Base Camp trek price already includes both flights and, in peak season, the Ramechhap transfer.
The Ramechhap Rule: Peak-Season Dates for 2026
Since 2019, and every peak season since 2022, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) has moved most Kathmandu–Lukla flights to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport to reduce congestion at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport.
- Autumn 2026: about 25 September to 30 November.
- Spring: usually about mid-March to mid-May.
- Outside these windows, flights normally return to Kathmandu's domestic terminal.
CAAN confirms the exact dates each season, sometimes only a few weeks ahead. If you book with us, we track the notice and adjust your pickup time and transfer for you.
Kathmandu or Ramechhap: What Changes for You
Flying from Kathmandu (off-season): you leave your Thamel hotel around 5–6 am, check in at the domestic terminal and are in Lukla within the hour. It is simple, but morning fog in Kathmandu can hold flights on the ground.
Flying from Ramechhap (peak season): Ramechhap Airport is in Manthali, about 132 km east of Kathmandu. The drive takes 4–5 hours on a winding road, so most trekkers are picked up between 1 and 3 am to make the first flights at around 6–8 am. The flight itself is shorter (15–20 minutes) and Ramechhap often has clearer morning weather than Kathmandu.
The trade-off: a very short night and a long first day, but a shorter flight and fewer fog delays. On the way back the route reverses: you fly Lukla → Ramechhap and drive 4–5 hours to Kathmandu, usually reaching Thamel in the afternoon.
Can you avoid Ramechhap? In peak season, only by taking a shared or private helicopter from Kathmandu, which costs more but saves the drive.
A Ramechhap Flight Day, Step by Step
- 11:00–3:00 am: Hotel pickup
Your driver collects you from your Kathmandu hotel. Pack the night before and keep warm layers handy; the jeep can be cold.
- 23:00–6:00 am: Drive to Manthali
About 132 km east through Dhulikhel and the Sunkoshi valley. Try to sleep; the road has many curves.
- 36:00–7:00 am: Check in at Ramechhap Airport
Bags are weighed (15 kg total). Small tea shops outside sell breakfast, tea and snacks.
- 46:30–10:00 am: Fly to Lukla
Flights go in waves as the weather allows. The flight takes 15–20 minutes, with Himalayan views on the left side.
- 5On landing: Meet your team in Lukla
Your guide and porters meet you, you have tea, and you trek to Phakding (about 3–4 hours) the same day.
Lukla Flight Baggage Allowance
| Item | Allowance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Checked bag | Usually 10 kg | Your trekking duffel, which your porter carries on the trail |
| Hand bag | Usually 5 kg | Your daypack: water, camera, warm layer, documents |
| Total | 15 kg | Weighed together at check-in on most flights |
| Extra weight | Charged per kg | Paid at check-in; space is not guaranteed and bags may follow on a later flight |
| Left in Kathmandu | Free at most hotels | Store city clothes and spare gear at your hotel until you return |
Small Twin Otter and Dornier aircraft have strict weight limits, so airlines enforce 15 kg closely. Rent bulky items such as a down jacket and sleeping bag in Kathmandu or Namche, and wear your heaviest boots and jacket on the plane.
Lukla Flight Delays and Cancellations
Lukla is a visual-flight-only airport on a short, sloping runway with mountains at both ends. Pilots need clear skies at Kathmandu or Ramechhap, along the route and at Lukla, so flights only run in the morning, before cloud and afternoon winds build up.
How often are flights delayed? Short delays of an hour or two are normal. Full-day cancellations happen several times each season, more often in spring haze, at the start and end of the monsoon (June–September) and after winter storms. In bad weather, a backlog of trekkers can take one to three days to clear.
What happens if your flight is cancelled? You are moved to the next day's flights, usually ahead of new bookings. When weather is poor at Lukla but fine elsewhere, flights sometimes divert to Phaplu, with a longer trek or drive into the Khumbu.
How we handle it: we build the trek around the morning flights, rebook you straight away and, when the delay threatens your international flight, arrange a shared helicopter so you get out on time (helicopter costs are covered by travel insurance only on some policies, so check yours).
Helicopter to Lukla: When It Makes Sense
| Option | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled flight | About US$215–257 one way | Most trekkers with 1–2 buffer days |
| Shared helicopter seat | About US$450–650 per seat | Skipping the Ramechhap drive, or getting out after days of cancelled flights |
| Private charter (up to 5) | About US$2,200–3,000 | Families and small groups, tight schedules, very heavy luggage |

Helicopters can fly in weather that grounds planes, but not in thick cloud. Weight limits per passenger are often lower than on planes at altitude.
How to Book Lukla Flights
- Book early for October and April: seats sell out 3–6 months ahead in the busiest weeks. Off-season, a few weeks is usually enough.
- Take the first flights: early departures are the most likely to fly before the weather changes.
- Keep 1–2 buffer days at the end of your trip before your international flight home.
- Book with your trek: trekking agencies book the flights, pickup and Ramechhap transfer together and rebook you when flights are cancelled. On our Everest Base Camp Trek 14 Days, both flights and the transfer are included.
- Carry your passport: you need it at check-in, along with your printed ticket or booking reference.
- Check your insurance: choose a policy that covers trip delay and helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m.
