Trekking in Nepal 2026: The Complete Guide to the Best Treks

Everything you need to choose and plan a trek in Nepal: the best treks compared, difficulty levels, seasons, permits, teahouses, altitude, packing and costs — from our team in Kathmandu.

Why Go Trekking in Nepal?

The world's greatest trekking destination

Nepal is home to 8 of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), and a network of trails that has been used for centuries by traders and villagers. Most routes are teahouse treks: you walk through Sherpa, Gurung and Tamang villages by day and sleep in family-run mountain lodges at night, with hot meals and no camping gear to carry.

  • Treks for every level — from easy 3-day walks to three-week high-altitude adventures.
  • Close-up Himalayan views — Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Annapurna, Machhapuchhre and Dhaulagiri.
  • Living culture — monasteries, prayer flags, mani walls and warm mountain hospitality.
  • Licensed local guides and porters who know every trail.

Best Treks in Nepal Compared

Days, maximum altitude and difficulty at a glance

  1. Everest Base Camp Trek — 12–14 days · max 5,545 m (Kala Patthar) · challenging. Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery and sunrise over Everest. The world’s most famous trek.
  2. Annapurna Base Camp Trek — 7–12 days · max 4,130 m · moderate. Rhododendron forest, Gurung villages, hot springs at Jhinu and a 360° ring of peaks.
  3. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek — 4–5 days · max 3,210 m · easy to moderate. The best short trek, with a famous sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.
  4. Annapurna Circuit — 12–18 days · max 5,416 m (Thorong La) · challenging. Rice terraces to high desert in one journey.
  5. Langtang Valley Trek — 7–10 days · max about 4,770 m (Kyanjin Ri) · moderate. The closest major trek to Kathmandu, no flight needed.
  6. Mardi Himal Trek — 5–7 days · max about 4,500 m · moderate. A quieter ridge trail with close-up Machhapuchhre views.
  7. Gokyo Lakes Trek — 12–14 days · max 5,357 m (Gokyo Ri) · challenging. Turquoise glacial lakes and four 8,000 m peaks.
  8. Manaslu Circuit — 14–16 days · max 5,106 m (Larkya La) · challenging. Remote and wild; restricted-area permit required.
  9. Upper Mustang Trek — 12–14 days · about 3,840 m (Lo Manthang) · moderate. Tibetan culture in a rain-shadow desert; good in the monsoon.
  10. Everest Three Passes — 18–21 days · max 5,535 m (Kongma La) · strenuous. For experienced trekkers.

Treks by Difficulty

Easy, moderate and challenging treks in Nepal

  • Easy treks (beginners and families) — Ghorepani Poon Hill, Dhampus and Australian Camp near Pokhara, and Kathmandu Valley rim hikes such as Nagarkot to Changu Narayan. Short days, lower altitudes.
  • Moderate treks — Annapurna Base Camp, Langtang Valley, Mardi Himal and Upper Mustang. Longer days and some altitude, but no high passes.
  • Challenging treks — Everest Base Camp, Gokyo Lakes, Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu. High altitude (above 5,000 m), 5–7 hours walking most days and acclimatisation days built in.
  • Strenuous treks — Everest Three Passes, Kanchenjunga and other remote routes for experienced trekkers.

Short Treks in Nepal

Great treks of 3 to 7 days

  • Ghorepani Poon Hill — 4–5 days from Pokhara; sunrise views of the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri.
  • Mardi Himal — 5–7 days from Pokhara; ridge-top camps beneath Machhapuchhre.
  • Dhampus & Australian Camp — 1–2 days; the easiest mountain views near Pokhara.
  • Langtang Valley — about 7 days by road from Kathmandu.
  • Everest View Trek — about 5–7 days to Namche Bazaar and the Everest View viewpoint, without going to base camp.

Short on time but want Everest? Take the Everest Base Camp helicopter tour — about 5 hours from Kathmandu.

Best Time for Trekking in Nepal

Month-by-month trekking seasons

  • October–November (best): clear, stable weather and the sharpest mountain views after the monsoon. Peak season — book early.
  • March–May (second best): warmer days, rhododendrons in bloom and the Everest climbing season; views can be hazier in May.
  • December–February (winter): cold nights and possible snow on high passes, but quiet trails and clear skies. Best for lower treks such as Poon Hill.
  • June–September (monsoon): rain, leeches and cloud on most routes, with possible flight delays. Rain-shadow treks such as Upper Mustang are the best choice.

Permits, Guides & Rules

What you need to trek legally in Nepal

  • Everest region: Sagarmatha National Park permit (NPR 3,000 + VAT) and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee (NPR 3,000).
  • Annapurna region: Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), NPR 3,000.
  • Langtang: Langtang National Park permit, NPR 3,000 + VAT.
  • Restricted areas (Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Nar Phu, Dolpo and others): special permits issued only through a registered trekking agency.
  • Licensed guide: now required on most trekking routes inside national parks and conservation areas, and always in restricted areas.

Fees change from time to time. InTicketo treks include a licensed guide and the permits listed on each trip page.

Teahouses, Altitude & Daily Life on Trek

What a typical trekking day looks like

  • Teahouses: simple, family-run lodges with twin rooms, shared bathrooms on most routes and a warm dining room. Hot showers, Wi-Fi and phone charging are often available for a small fee.
  • Food: dal bhat (rice, lentils and curry — the trekker’s fuel), noodles, soups, momos, eggs and porridge.
  • A typical day: breakfast around 7 am, walk 5–7 hours with a lunch stop, arrive at the next village in the afternoon, dinner and early bed.
  • Altitude: above about 2,500 m, ascend slowly and use acclimatisation days. Tell your guide about headaches, nausea or breathlessness — descending is the best cure for altitude sickness.
  • Porters: a porter can carry your main bag so you trek with only a light daypack.

Packing & Training for a Nepal Trek

How to prepare

  • Essentials: broken-in hiking boots, warm down jacket, thermal base layers, fleece, waterproof shell, warm hat and gloves, a sleeping bag suited to the season, sunglasses, sunscreen, headlamp and a refillable water bottle with purification.
  • Buy or rent in Kathmandu: Thamel has many shops for down jackets, sleeping bags and poles.
  • Training: 2–3 months of regular walking, stair climbing and hikes with a loaded daypack make a big difference on longer treks.
  • Insurance: choose a policy that covers trekking to your maximum altitude and helicopter evacuation.
  • Buffer days: add 1–2 spare days after treks with mountain flights, such as Lukla.
