Pokhara Travel Guide 2026: Places to Visit & Things to Do

Everything you need to plan your time in Pokhara: the best places to visit, top adventures, how many days to stay, where to sleep and eat, and how to get there. Written by our team in Nepal.

Why Visit Pokhara?

Nepal's lake city and adventure capital

Pokhara is Nepal’s second most-visited city and its most relaxing. It sits at roughly 800 m beside Phewa Lake, with the Annapurna range rising straight above it — the peaks of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail, 6,993 m), Annapurna and Dhaulagiri are visible from the lakeshore on clear mornings. No other city in the world puts you this close to 7,000–8,000 m mountains.

  • Lakes and mountain views — boat on Phewa, Begnas and Rupa lakes with the Himalaya reflected in the water.
  • Nepal’s adventure capital — paragliding, ziplining, ultralight flights, bungee, rafting and mountain biking.
  • Gateway to the Annapurnas — the start point for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal and the Annapurna Circuit.
  • Easy and laid-back — the Lakeside area is flat and walkable, with cafes, bookshops and live music.
  • Perfect for rest — the ideal place to relax before or after a trek.

15 Best Places to Visit in Pokhara

Top attractions in and around the city

  1. Phewa Lake
Pokhara’s centrepiece. Rent a colourful wooden boat or join a guided boat ride; mornings are calmest and clearest for mountain reflections.
  2. Tal Barahi Temple
A small two-tiered pagoda temple on an island in Phewa Lake, reached by boat. Busiest on Saturdays, when locals make offerings.
  3. Sarangkot
A hilltop viewpoint at about 1,600 m and Pokhara’s most famous sunrise spot, with a panorama from Dhaulagiri to Annapurna and Machhapuchhre. It is also the main paragliding take-off point.
  4. World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa)
A white Buddhist stupa on a ridge above the lake’s south shore. Hike up through forest or take a boat across and climb, for views over the lake, city and mountains.
  5. Davis Falls
A waterfall where the lake’s outflow plunges into an underground tunnel. Most dramatic in and just after the monsoon.
  6. Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave
A sacred Shiva cave opposite Davis Falls; walk down through the cave to see the waterfall from below.
  7. International Mountain Museum
The story of the Himalaya, its peoples and its climbers, with mountain views from the grounds. A good rainy-day option.
  8. Seti River Gorge
The milky-white Seti River runs through a narrow gorge, in places tens of metres deep, right through the city. See it from Mahendrapul bridge or K.I. Singh bridge.
  9. Mahendra Cave & Bat Cave
Two limestone caves north of the city; the Bat Cave is home to thousands of bats.
  10. Begnas & Rupa Lakes
Quieter lakes about 15 km east of the city, with fish farms, village paths and calm boating.
  11. Bindhyabasini Temple
One of Pokhara’s oldest and most important Hindu temples, in the old bazaar area.
  12. Old Bazaar
Traditional Newar shops and houses from the days when Pokhara was a trading stop between India and Tibet.
  13. Matepani Gumba
A hillside Tibetan Buddhist monastery with prayer halls and city views.
  14. Pumdikot
A hilltop with a giant Shiva statue and wide views of the lake and Annapurna range.
  15. Dhampus & Australian Camp
Easy hikes to ridge-top villages with close-up views of Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre — perfect as a 1–2 day mini-trek.

Several attractions charge small entry fees for foreign visitors. Carry cash in Nepalese rupees.

  • Watch sunrise at Sarangkot — drive up before dawn for first light on Machhapuchhre and Annapurna.
  • Boat on Phewa Lake — paddle to Tal Barahi Temple or across to the World Peace Pagoda trail.

How Many Days in Pokhara?

Sample 1-, 2- and 3-day Pokhara itineraries

2–3 days is ideal if you are not trekking. Here is how to use them:

  • Day 1 — Lake and city: sunrise boat ride on Phewa Lake, visit Tal Barahi Temple, hike to the World Peace Pagoda, then Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave. Sunset at Lakeside.
  • Day 2 — Sunrise and adventure: Sarangkot sunrise, then paragliding or the zipline. Afternoon at the International Mountain Museum and the Seti River gorge.
  • Day 3 — Hills and lakes: an easy hike to Dhampus or Australian Camp, or a relaxed day at Begnas and Rupa lakes.

Trekking? Add the trek itself — 4–5 days for Poon Hill or about 12 days for Annapurna Base Camp — plus one rest day in Pokhara at the end.

Nepal in one trip: 2–3 days in Kathmandu, 3 days in Pokhara and 2 days in Chitwan makes a classic 7–8 day Nepal holiday.

Best Time to Visit Pokhara

Weather, views and adventure seasons

  • October–November (best): clear skies and the sharpest mountain views after the monsoon. Peak season for trekking and paragliding.
  • March–April: warm days and rhododendrons in bloom in the hills. Views can turn hazy later in spring.
  • December–February: cool mornings, mild sunny days and excellent visibility. A great, quieter time to visit.
  • June–August (monsoon): Pokhara is one of the wettest places in Nepal, with heavy rain and clouds hiding the mountains. Davis Falls is at its most powerful, and many paragliding and adventure operators reduce or pause flights.

Tip: mountain views are almost always clearest early in the morning, so plan sunrise trips and flights before 9 am.

Food & Nightlife in Pokhara

What and where to eat and drink

  • Try: Thakali thali (a rich set meal from the Annapurna region), fresh lake fish, momos, dal bhat, sel roti and Nepali milk tea.
  • Where to eat: Lakeside has everything from bakeries and coffee shops to lake-view restaurants serving Nepali, Indian, Tibetan and international food.
  • Nightlife: relaxed bars with live music and cultural dance shows along Lakeside — livelier in the peak season.
  • Shopping: pashmina, Tibetan handicrafts and trekking gear in Lakeside shops.

How to Get to Pokhara

Flights, buses and private transfers from Kathmandu

  • By air: flights from Kathmandu take about 25 minutes and land at Pokhara International Airport. Sit on the right side when flying to Pokhara for mountain views.
  • By tourist bus: comfortable daily buses from Kathmandu take roughly 6–8 hours along the Prithvi Highway, depending on traffic and roadworks.
  • By private car or jeep: the most comfortable road option, with stops whenever you like — ask us about private Kathmandu–Pokhara transfers.
  • From Chitwan: about 4–5 hours by road.
  • Getting around: Lakeside is walkable; use taxis for Sarangkot, Davis Falls and the caves, or rent a bicycle or scooter.

Pokhara Travel Tips

Know before you go

  • Book paragliding and adventure activities with licensed, insured operators, and fly early for the best conditions.
  • Wear life jackets on boats and never swim in the lake far from shore.
  • Carry cash — small shops, boats and entry fees are usually cash only. ATMs are easy to find in Lakeside.
  • Bring a light jacket for sunrise at Sarangkot, even in warm months.
  • In the monsoon, carry rain gear and expect leeches on forest trails.
  • Dress modestly at temples and the World Peace Pagoda, and remove shoes where asked.
  • Drink only bottled, boiled or filtered water.
