Tengboche Teahouse
A peaceful teahouse night beside the Khumbu's greatest monastery
Stay at Tengboche (3,860 m), right beside Tengboche Monastery, with monks' prayers in the afternoon and sunrise over Ama Dablam and Everest. Night 5 on our 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek.
About Tengboche Teahouse
Tengboche (3,860 m) sits on a forested saddle beside Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual heart of the Khumbu. There are only a handful of teahouses here, so a night at Tengboche feels peaceful and special: monks chanting in the afternoon, yaks grazing on the meadow and Ama Dablam glowing above the monastery at sunrise.
Your night at Tengboche
You arrive on Day 5 after a balcony walk from Namche Bazaar, a drop to Phunki Thenga and a 2-3 hour climb through rhododendron and birch forest. If the timing is right, join the monks’ afternoon prayers inside the monastery before dinner.
What the teahouse is like
Rooms are simple twin rooms with beds and blankets, and bathrooms are usually shared. The heart of the teahouse is the dining room with its stove, where trekkers gather for dinner and hot drinks. Charging and Wi-Fi may be available for a small fee. Nights drop to about -8°C, so a warm sleeping bag is essential.
