Did this on a whim with one day left in Kathmandu before my flight home. Best spontaneous decision I've ever made. We were airborne by 6:30am and by 9am I was eating eggs on the Hotel Everest View terrace with Everest right in front of me. Back in my hotel by noon. Absolutely unreal experience.

I came to Nepal for a wedding and had just one free day. My friend told me to book the helicopter tour and I almost didn't because of the price. I am so glad I did. The moment we flew over the Khumbu Icefall and I saw Everest Base Camp below us I genuinely couldn't speak. The breakfast at Hotel Everest View with Everest in front of me was the best meal of my life.

I have MS and trekking to Everest Base Camp was never going to be possible for me. This helicopter tour gave me something I thought I'd never have — I saw Everest. I flew above Base Camp. I had breakfast at the world's highest hotel. The crew was incredibly thoughtful and made sure I was comfortable throughout. I cried on the way back. Happy tears.

FAQs Regarding This Activity

What is the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour?
The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour is a same-day round-trip flight from Kathmandu that takes you into the heart of the Khumbu Himalayan region. The tour includes an aerial flyover of Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), a landing at Kala Patthar viewpoint (5,545 m / 18,192 ft), and a breakfast stop at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m) — all within approximately 4–5 hours. No trekking experience or physical fitness is required.
Does the helicopter actually land at Everest Base Camp?
No. The helicopter performs an aerial flyover of Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), circling so passengers can see the Khumbu Icefall, Khumbu Glacier, and expedition tents from above. The physical landing takes place at Kala Patthar (5,545 m), which is actually higher than Base Camp and offers a superior panoramic view of Everest's summit pyramid. A second landing takes place at Hotel Everest View (Syangboche, 3,880 m) for breakfast.
How long does the Everest Helicopter Tour take?
The total duration is 4–5 hours from hotel pickup to return. The helicopter itself is airborne for approximately 3.5–4 hours including the Lukla refuelling stop. You spend 10–15 minutes at Kala Patthar and 45–60 minutes at Hotel Everest View for breakfast.
What is the maximum altitude reached on this tour?
The maximum altitude is 5,545 m (18,192 ft) at Kala Patthar, where the helicopter lands for 10–15 minutes. This is higher than Everest Base Camp itself (5,364 m).
What is the difference between Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp?
Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is the staging area for Everest expeditions, located on the Khumbu Glacier. It is not a scenic viewpoint — Everest's summit is not visible from there. Kala Patthar (5,545 m) is a rocky viewpoint above Gorakshep that provides the best panoramic views of Everest's south face and summit. This tour gives you both: an aerial flyover of EBC and a physical landing at Kala Patthar.
What mountains will I see on this tour?
The flight route passes by: Mount Everest (8,848.86 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), Cho Oyu (8,201 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Pumori (7,161 m), Khumbutse (6,636 m), Thamserku (6,618 m), Kangtega (6,782 m), and Kongde Ri (6,187 m). You will also see the Khumbu Glacier, Khumbu Icefall, Tengboche Monastery, Namche Bazaar, and the Hillary Tenzing Airport at Lukla.
What type of helicopter is used?
InTicketo operates exclusively with CAAN-licensed operators flying the Airbus AS350 B3 "Écureuil" or Bell 407 — both purpose-built for high-altitude mountain flying and certified for operations above 5,000 m. The AS350 B3 is the most widely used high-altitude helicopter in Nepal and has an exceptional safety record in the Khumbu region.

Booking & Cost Questions

How much does the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour cost?
The shared group tour costs $1,499 per person and includes all permits, transfers, and breakfast at Hotel Everest View. A private charter starts from approximately $3,300 for the whole helicopter (1–4 passengers). All government-mandated permits (Sagarmatha National Park, Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Municipality Fee, airport tax) are included in InTicketo's price.
How far in advance should I book?
On average, this tour is booked 13 days in advance. During peak seasons (October, April), availability fills 3–4 weeks ahead. For spring (March–May) travel, booking 4–6 weeks in advance is recommended. Last-minute bookings are possible in shoulder months (September, November).
What is the deposit and payment schedule?
A 20% deposit secures your booking with instant confirmation. The remaining balance is due 7 days before your departure date. Full payment is accepted at any time.
Can I book a private charter?
Yes. A private Everest helicopter charter reserves the entire helicopter exclusively for your group (1–4 passengers). Private charters offer full schedule flexibility, your chosen departure time, and the option to customize stops. Contact us via WhatsApp for private charter pricing.
Does the price change if fewer than 5 people join the group?
No. The $1,499 per person price is fixed regardless of group size. The tour operates with a minimum of 1 passenger — it will not be cancelled due to low numbers on our end. If we are unable to fill the flight, we will operate it privately for confirmed passengers at the group price.

Health & Safety Questions

Is altitude sickness a risk on the helicopter tour?
The risk is significantly lower than trekking because your time at altitude is very brief (10–15 minutes at 5,545 m). AMS requires sustained exposure — typically 6–12 hours — before symptoms develop meaningfully. Most passengers feel mild breathlessness at Kala Patthar, which resolves within minutes of descent. Emergency oxygen is carried on every flight.
Is oxygen provided on the helicopter?
Emergency oxygen is carried on every flight. Passengers who feel unwell at altitude can use it immediately. The oxygen is for emergency use — it is not given as a prophylactic to all passengers. If you want to take Diamox (acetazolamide) as a preventive measure, consult your doctor before travel.
Is the tour safe for people with heart conditions?
People with mild to moderate cardiovascular conditions often complete this tour without difficulty due to the brief altitude exposure. However, anyone with serious heart or lung conditions should consult their cardiologist before booking. Provide full medical disclosure at booking and we will advise accordingly.
Can pregnant women take the helicopter tour?
Many pregnant travelers complete this tour without issue. However, altitude exposure during pregnancy carries some risk and varies significantly by individual. Please consult your OB/GYN before booking. InTicketo cannot be held liable for altitude-related complications in pregnancy.
How safe is the Everest helicopter tour?
All InTicketo flights operate with CAAN (Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal)-licensed operators. Pilots hold Type Ratings for high-altitude mountain flying with 500+ hours minimum. Mandatory pre-flight weight and balance checks are performed at Pheriche. Flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and are cancelled if visibility is insufficient. The pilot's go/no-go decision is final and never overridden by commercial pressure.
What happens if I feel unwell at Kala Patthar?
Inform your pilot or guide immediately. If you experience serious symptoms (severe headache, confusion, loss of balance, or breathlessness at rest), the pilot will descend immediately to a lower altitude. Emergency oxygen is on board. The tour itinerary is always subordinate to passenger safety.

Logistics Questions

What time is the hotel pickup?
Your private vehicle will collect you from your Kathmandu hotel at 06:00 AM. The departure time may be 06:15–06:30 AM depending on your hotel's distance from Tribhuvan International Airport Domestic Terminal. InTicketo will confirm your exact pickup time 24–48 hours before departure.
What time will I be back in Kathmandu?
The tour returns to Kathmandu by approximately 11:30 AM–12:00 PM. This gives you a full afternoon and evening in Kathmandu, or an international flight departing after 4:00 PM.
Can I do this tour and catch an international flight the same day?
Yes, if your international flight departs after 4:00 PM. The tour returns by approximately 11:30–12:00 PM, giving you 4+ hours for airport transfer and check-in. However, weather delays do occur (~15–20% of departures). To avoid risk, we strongly recommend not scheduling the helicopter tour on the morning of an international departure. Always give yourself a one-day buffer.
Where does the tour start and end?
The tour starts with a private pickup from your Kathmandu hotel and ends with a drop-off at your same hotel (or an address of your choice within Kathmandu). The helicopter departs from and returns to Tribhuvan International Airport Domestic Terminal.
Are restrooms available during the tour?
Yes. Restroom facilities are available at Lukla Airport (your first landing/refuelling stop) and at Hotel Everest View (your breakfast stop). There are no restroom facilities at Kala Patthar (your 10–15 minute landing).
What is the luggage allowance on the helicopter?
Each passenger may bring a small daypack up to approximately 5 kg. Large bags, trekking packs, and suitcases should be left at your Kathmandu hotel or stored at the InTicketo airport facility. Do not bring more than you need for a 5-hour morning adventure.
Why does the helicopter stop at Lukla?
Lukla (2,840 m) is approximately halfway between Kathmandu and the Khumbu region. Refuelling here is standard operating procedure — it ensures the helicopter has enough fuel for the high-altitude segment and the return journey. High-altitude flight burns more fuel, so the Lukla stop is an aviation safety requirement, not optional.

Experience

Is this tour suitable for children and elderly travelers?
Yes. There is no minimum age restriction (infants sit on caregiver's lap). Children aged 2.5+ count as full passengers. This tour is extremely popular with travelers aged 60–85+ and with families seeking a shared experience regardless of physical ability. The 10–15 minutes at Kala Patthar requires standing and walking briefly on rocky terrain — manageable for virtually all passengers moving at a slow pace.
What is the best month to do the Everest Helicopter Tour?
October is the single finest month: post-monsoon clarity delivers the sharpest mountain views, skies are reliably clear, and the tour completion rate exceeds 80%. The full best season breakdown: Spring (March–May): Excellent — rhododendrons blooming, active climbing season. Autumn (September–November): Best overall — post-monsoon clarity, October is the finest month. Winter (December–February): Possible but cold; quieter with fewer tourists. Monsoon (June–August): Not recommended — frequent cancellations, cloud cover, poor visibility.
What is Hotel Everest View and what is included in breakfast?
Hotel Everest View is a luxury lodge at Syangboche (3,880 m / 12,730 ft) above Namche Bazaar. It is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's highest-placed hotel accessible by helicopter and road. The included breakfast typically includes eggs (scrambled or fried), toast, cereals, fruit, tea, coffee, and juice — served on the south-facing terrace with a direct panoramic view of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The breakfast setting is widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary dining experiences on Earth.

What Exactly Happens on the Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour?

The tour is a same-day return flight from Kathmandu that covers approximately 320 km round-trip. Here is the precise sequence of events:

  1. Private hotel pickup (06:00 AM) from your Kathmandu accommodation
  2. Check-in at Tribhuvan International Airport Domestic Terminal — weight check, permit collection, boarding passes
  3. Flight to Lukla (45 min) — first views of the Himalayan foothills
  4. Refuelling stop at Lukla/Pheriche — passengers may divide into groups of 2–3 for the high-altitude segment
  5. Fly over Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), Tengboche Monastery (3,860 m), Dingboche (4,410 m)
  6. Aerial orbit of Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) — the tents, the Khumbu Icefall, the Khumbu Glacier from above
  7. Landing at Kala Patthar (5,545 m) — 10–15 minutes, 360° panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori
  8. Flight to Hotel Everest View (Syangboche, 3,880 m) — breakfast on the terrace
  9. 45–60 minutes at Hotel Everest View — breakfast, photos, panoramic views
  10. Return flight to Kathmandu via Lukla
  11. Back in Kathmandu by approximately 11:30 AM
Note
EBC and Kala Patthar are NOT the same place. Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) is where climbers set up tents at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall. Kala Patthar (5,545 m) is the viewpoint hill above Gorakshep that offers the most complete panoramic view of Everest's summit pyramid. This tour gives you both — an aerial flyover of EBC and a physical landing at Kala Patthar.

No helicopter lands directly at Everest Base Camp. This is one of the most-searched questions and deserves a clear answer.

The helicopter performs an aerial flyover of Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 m, circling the area so you can see the Khumbu Icefall, the Khumbu Glacier, and the colourful expedition tents from above.

The physical landing takes place at Kala Patthar (5,545 m), which is actually 181 metres higher than Base Camp and provides a superior panoramic view of Everest’s summit face. You will step out of the helicopter here for 10–15 minutes.

The second landing is at Hotel Everest View (Syangboche, 3,880 m) where you have breakfast.

Why doesn’t the helicopter land at EBC itself? Everest Base Camp sits on the Khumbu Glacier — uneven, crevassed ice — which is not a safe helicopter landing surface. Kala Patthar has a flat landing area and provides better mountain views.

Tour Type Price Per Person Group Size What’s Included
Shared Group Tour (this tour) $1,499 / person Up to 5 pax Transfers, flight, permits, breakfast
Private Charter From $3,300 total 1–4 pax Everything above + exclusive charter
EBC Trek + Helicopter Return From $2,449 / person Small group 14-day trek + helicopter back

What is included in the $1,499 price:

  • Round-trip helicopter Kathmandu → EBC area → Kathmandu
  • Private hotel transfer in Kathmandu
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Fee
  • Kathmandu domestic airport departure tax
  • Breakfast at Hotel Everest View
  • InTicketo airport representative
  • Emergency oxygen onboard

What is NOT included (extra costs to budget for):

  • Nepal tourist visa: $30 (15 days), $50 (30 days), or $125 (90 days)
  • Personal travel insurance (strongly recommended — from ~$30/week)
  • Alcoholic beverages at Hotel Everest View
  • Tips for pilot and ground staff (~$10–20 is customary)
  • Drone permit (if you wish to fly a drone — requires separate CAAN approval)

Do permits cost extra? On this tour, all permits are included in the price. Some operators list permits separately — always confirm before booking.

Shared Group Private Charter
Price $1,499/person ~$3,300 total
Group size Up to 5 passengers Just you (1–4 pax)
Schedule Fixed daily departures Your chosen date and time
Flexibility Less flexible Fully flexible
Best for Solo travelers, couples, small families Families, corporate groups, proposals, anniversary
Cancellation risk Tour runs if minimum pax met Guaranteed once confirmed

Recommendation: For most travelers, the shared group tour at $1,499 is the better value. The flight experience is identical — same helicopter type, same route, same pilot, same landing. The only difference is you share the cabin with up to 4 other passengers.

The private charter is worth considering if you are traveling as a group of 4+ (the per-person price becomes competitive), want total schedule flexibility, or are planning something special like a proposal.

The Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour has a significantly lower altitude sickness risk than trekking for one precise reason: time at altitude.

Time at each altitude stop:

  • Kala Patthar (5,545 m): 10–15 minutes
  • Hotel Everest View (3,880 m): 45–60 minutes
  • All other altitudes: in transit (minutes)

Altitude Mountain Sickness (AMS) requires sustained exposure — typically 6–12 hours or an overnight stay — before symptoms develop meaningfully. Most passengers feel mild breathlessness and slight light-headedness at Kala Patthar. This is entirely normal and resolves within 2–3 minutes of descent.

Symptoms you may experience:

  • Mild breathlessness at 5,545 m — normal, resolves immediately on descent
  • Slight headache — manageable, usually clears within 30 min at 3,880 m
  • Light-headedness — possible for 5–10 minutes, especially if you move fast

How to minimise your risk:

  • Avoid alcohol the night before
  • Eat a light meal before departure
  • Drink 500 ml of water before leaving your hotel
  • Move slowly at Kala Patthar — no sprinting for selfies
  • Tell your pilot or InTicketo representative immediately if you feel unwell

Who should consult a doctor before booking:

  • History of severe AMS, HAPE, or HACE
  • Serious cardiovascular conditions
  • Serious pulmonary/respiratory conditions
  • Pregnant travelers (consult your OB/GYN — many fly this tour without issue)

Safety infrastructure on every flight:

  • Emergency oxygen cylinder onboard
  • CAAN-licensed pilots with high-altitude training
  • Weather monitoring — tour cancelled if conditions unsafe
  • Pilot has final go/no-go authority — no commercial pressure overrides

Weather in the Khumbu region changes rapidly. Here is InTicketo’s exact policy:

If weather prevents the tour on your scheduled day:

  • You will be offered the next available date (usually the following morning) at no extra charge
  • If you cannot reschedule, you receive a full refund
  • Your InTicketo representative will contact you by 05:30 AM if conditions look unfavourable

Weather cancellation is more common than you might think. Approximately 15–20% of departures are delayed or rescheduled during the shoulder season. October is statistically the most reliable month (80%+ completion rate). Monsoon months (June–August) have the highest cancellation rate.

Our advice: If possible, schedule the helicopter tour at the beginning of your Kathmandu stay — not the final morning before an international flight. Give yourself a one-day buffer.

Can I catch an international flight the same day? Yes, but only if your international departure is after 4:00 PM. The tour returns to Kathmandu by approximately 11:30–12:00 PM. However, if weather causes a delay, this creates risk. We strongly recommend not scheduling the helicopter tour on the same morning as an international departure.

This tour is suitable for all fitness levels. No trekking experience, altitude acclimatisation, or physical training is required.

Age:

  • Minimum age: No absolute minimum. Infants must sit on caregiver’s lap for the entire flight
  • Children aged 2.5 years and above count as full passengers for seat purposes
  • This tour is popular with travelers aged 60–85+
  • The oldest passenger we have welcomed was 84 years old

Weight:

  • Passengers weighing over 100 kg (220 lbs) must notify InTicketo at booking
  • Weight distribution is critical for high-altitude helicopter safety
  • There is no absolute weight restriction, but adjustments to seating or group composition may be required
  • Total aircraft weight (passengers + bags + fuel) is always within CAAN safety limits

Fitness:

  • No fitness required for the Kathmandu → Hotel Everest View segment
  • At Kala Patthar (5,545 m), you will stand and walk for 10–15 minutes on uneven terrain. This is manageable for virtually all passengers, but move slowly at altitude
  • Travelers with mobility aids (walking frames, wheelchairs): Please contact us to discuss arrangements. The Hotel Everest View terrace is accessible

Medical conditions:

  • Heart conditions: Consult your cardiologist before booking. Low-to-moderate risk on this tour due to short altitude exposure
  • Respiratory conditions: Same — consult your doctor
  • Fear of flying: Many travelers with mild fear of flying complete this tour successfully. The helicopter is quiet, stable, and the pilot is communicative. Inform us at booking and we will brief the crew

Clothing (critical at 5,545 m):

Item Why
Warm base layer (thermal) Temperature at Kala Patthar: -5°C to -20°C depending on season
Insulated mid-layer (fleece or down) Essential — it is genuinely cold outside the helicopter
Windproof outer jacket Kala Patthar is exposed and windy
Warm hat covering ears Heat loss from the head is significant at altitude
Gloves (warm, not thin) Hands go numb quickly at 5,545 m
Sunglasses (UV400 or higher) UV radiation is intense at altitude — snow blindness is real
Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots You walk on rocky terrain at Kala Patthar
Thin layers for Kathmandu arrival and Hotel Everest View Hotel terrace can be warm in morning sun

What to bring (fit in a small daypack):

  • Camera or phone (fully charged — cold drains batteries 40% faster, bring a spare)
  • Sunscreen (SPF 50+)
  • Water bottle (500 ml minimum — drink before departure)
  • Lip balm (altitude air is extremely dry)
  • Personal medication
  • Motion sickness tablets if prone (though helicopter turbulence is minimal)
  • Small amount of cash for tips ($10–20) or optional extras at Hotel Everest View

What NOT to bring:

  • Large bags or checked luggage (storage provided in Kathmandu)
  • Drone without a CAAN permit — it will be confiscated
  • Anything you cannot fit in a small daypack — weight allowance per person: 5 kg bag

This is the most commonly misunderstood aspect of the Everest Helicopter Tour and deserves complete clarity.

Everest Base Camp (5,364 m / 17,598 ft) The base camp for climbers attempting to summit Everest. Located on the Khumbu Glacier. During climbing season (March–May), it hosts hundreds of expedition tents from teams of many nations. It is not a scenic viewpoint — you are surrounded by ice and glacier moraine, and Everest’s summit is not visible from here (obscured by Nuptse).

Kala Patthar (5,545 m / 18,192 ft) A rocky prominence above the village of Gorakshep. This is the premier viewpoint for Everest’s summit pyramid in the entire Khumbu region. From Kala Patthar, you have an unobstructed view of Everest’s south face, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Pumori simultaneously. The summit is clearly visible. This is where the iconic Everest photographs are taken.

What this tour gives you:

  • Aerial flyover of Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m — you see the Khumbu Icefall and expedition tents from above
  • Physical landing at Kala Patthar at 5,545 m — you step out and photograph Everest face-to-face for 10–15 minutes

This is the best possible Everest experience short of trekking there yourself.

For families with children:

  • Children aged 5–12 are welcome and typically find the flight thrilling
  • Children under 2.5 years sit on a caregiver’s lap (one lap child per adult passenger)
  • The 10–15 minutes at Kala Patthar is the only physical activity required — short and manageable
  • Breakfast at Hotel Everest View is child-friendly
  • Bring snacks for children as the early morning pickup may precede breakfast

For senior travelers (60+):

  • This is one of the most popular tours among travelers aged 60–80+
  • No physical fitness required
  • The helicopter is comfortable and flight time is smooth in clear weather
  • Boarding and disembarking assistance is available — inform us at booking
  • Altitude exposure is brief enough that even seniors with mild heart or lung conditions often complete this tour without issue (consult your doctor)
  • Many seniors have described this as “the most moving experience of my travel life”

For solo travelers:

  • You join a shared group of up to 5 passengers — you will likely meet other travelers at the airport
  • Solo travelers report the shared group format as a positive experience
  • Private tours are available if you prefer to fly alone

Safety, Altitude & Health

Altitude Sickness Risk

Altitude sickness (AMS) risk on this tour is very low — significantly lower than trekking — for one critical reason: time at altitude.

You spend only 10–15 minutes at Kala Patthar (5,545 m) and approximately 60 minutes at Hotel Everest View (3,880 m). The human body requires sustained exposure — typically 6–12 hours or an overnight stay — for AMS symptoms to develop meaningfully. Most passengers feel mild breathlessness at Kala Patthar, which is entirely normal and resolves within minutes of descent.

What symptoms you may feel:

  • Mild breathlessness at Kala Patthar (5,545 m) — normal, resolves on descent
  • Slight headache — manageable, usually resolves within 30 minutes of returning to 3,880 m
  • Light-headedness — possible for 5–10 minutes, especially if you move quickly

How to minimize your risk:

  • Avoid alcohol the night before the tour
  • Eat a light meal before departure — nothing heavy or greasy
  • Drink at least 500ml of water before departure and carry water
  • Move slowly at Kala Patthar — this is not the moment to sprint for a selfie
  • Tell your pilot or ground team immediately if you feel unwell
  • If you have a history of severe AMS, HAPE, or HACE — consult your doctor and ask about Diamox (Acetazolamide) as a preventive measure

Who should consult a doctor before booking:

  • History of severe altitude sickness (AMS, HAPE, or HACE)
  • Serious cardiovascular conditions
  • Serious pulmonary / respiratory conditions
  • Pregnant travelers (note: many fly this tour without issue — consult your OB/GYN)

Emergency oxygen is carried on every flight. Pilots are trained in high-altitude first aid and emergency descent procedures. If any passenger shows signs of serious altitude distress, the pilot descends immediately.

Helicopter Safety Standards

  • All flights operated by CAAN (Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal)-licensed operators.
  • Pilots hold Type Rating for high-altitude mountain flying — 500+ flight hours minimum
  • Mandatory pre-flight weight and balance checks at Pheriche
  • Emergency oxygen cylinders on every flight
  • Flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) — cancelled if visibility insufficient
  • Maximum safety protocol: pilot makes final go/no-go decision, no commercial pressure overrides
  • InTicketo works only with CAAN-approved operators with proven high-altitude safety records

Who Cannot Take This Tour

  • No absolute age restriction, but infants must sit on caregiver’s lap throughout
  • Passengers over 100 kg should notify us at booking — weight distribution may require adjustment
  • Not recommended for anyone with serious cardiac conditions without doctor’s clearance
  • Not recommended for anyone with serious respiratory conditions without doctor’s clearance
  • Pregnant travelers should consult OB/GYN before booking
  • Anyone with a history of severe AMS should discuss with their doctor first

Photography Guide

Best camera for this tour:

  • Mirrorless camera with a 14–35mm wide-angle lens — captures the full mountain panorama
  • Sony Alpha series, Nikon Z, Canon R series all excellent choices
  • Latest iPhone or Samsung — the computational cameras now produce exceptional results
  • Zoom lenses (70–200mm) for close-up summit details from the helicopter window

Technique inside the helicopter:

  • Press your lens gently against the window to eliminate reflections (most important tip)
  • Turn off your flash entirely — it reflects off the glass
  • Use a fast shutter speed: 1/1000s minimum for sharp shots from a moving helicopter
  • Wear dark-coloured clothing — reduces glass glare in your shots significantly
  • Shoot in RAW format if possible — better recovery in post-processing
  • Window seats rotate — ask your pilot to ensure you get one on each key section

At Kala Patthar (your 10–15 minutes):

  • Move quickly but carefully — altitude affects coordination, go slow on uneven ground
  • Face southwest for Everest summit face shots
  • Use the helicopter as a foreground element with Everest behind — iconic composition
  • Golden hour is early morning — you arrive at approximately 9:00 AM, light is excellent

At Hotel Everest View:

  • The terrace faces south — Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam are fully lit in the morning
  • No backlight issues at this time of day — ideal for portraits with mountain backgrounds
  • Wide-angle from the terrace captures all 4 peaks simultaneously

Technical notes:

  • Cold at altitude drains batteries 40% faster — bring fully charged spares
  • Drone note: drones require a separate CAAN permit AND Sagarmatha National Park approval — do not bring an unlicensed drone, it will be confiscated at the park boundary
  • All photography inside the helicopter and at landing sites is permitted
