Nepal Travel Essentials: Tips for Your 2026 Trip

Everything to sort before and after you land — visa, money, SIM cards, insurance, permits, packing and local etiquette — from our team in Kathmandu.

Nepal Visa on Arrival

Entry rules for most foreign visitors

Most visitors can get a tourist visa on arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. Typical fees are:

  • 15 days: US$30
  • 30 days: US$50
  • 90 days: US$125

You’ll need a passport valid for at least six months. To save time, fill in the online arrival form on the official Nepal Immigration website shortly before you fly, and carry the fee in cash (US dollars are easiest). Indian citizens do not need a visa, and citizens of other SAARC countries can usually get a free 30-day visa. Rules can change, so check the official Department of Immigration website before you travel. Landing soon? Read our Kathmandu airport arrival guide.

Money, ATMs and Payments

How to pay your way in Nepal

  • Currency: Nepali rupee (NPR). Carry small notes for taxis, snacks, tips and entrance tickets.
  • ATMs: plentiful in Kathmandu and Pokhara, but each withdrawal has a limit and a fee. ATMs are rare on trekking routes — Namche Bazaar is the last reliable one on the Everest trek.
  • Cards: accepted in larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the cities; teahouses and heritage sites usually take cash only.
  • Money exchange: licensed exchange counters in Thamel and Lakeside give fair rates; keep your receipts.
  • Tipping: appreciated for trekking guides, porters and drivers; many restaurants add a 10% service charge.

SIM Cards and Internet

Stay connected for maps, ride apps and messages

Nepal’s two main mobile networks are Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell. Tourist SIM cards with data are cheap and available at the airport and in Thamel — bring your passport and a passport photo. Coverage is good in cities and on the lower trekking trails, but patchy at high altitude, where many lodges sell Wi-Fi cards.

Step-by-step advice: SIM card and internet in Nepal for tourists.

Travel Insurance and Health

Stay safe on the road and the trail

  • Travel insurance: essential for trekking — make sure it covers your maximum altitude, helicopter rescue and medical evacuation.
  • Drinking water: don’t drink tap water; use filtered, boiled or purified water and refill a bottle to cut plastic.
  • Altitude: above 2,500 m, go slowly and know the symptoms of altitude sickness. Our guided trekking tours include acclimatisation days.
  • Vaccinations and medicines: check with your doctor or travel clinic before you go and bring a basic first-aid kit.
  • Emergencies: the Tourist Police can be reached on 1144.

Getting Around Nepal

From the airport to the mountains

  • Airport pickup: pre-book a fixed-price Kathmandu airport transfer so a driver is waiting when you land.
  • In the city: taxis (agree the fare first), ride apps, or a private car with driver by the hour.
  • Between cities: tourist buses, private cars or short domestic flights to Pokhara and Lukla.

What to Pack for Nepal

Essentials for cities and mountains

  • Layers: warm days and cold nights are normal, especially from October to March.
  • Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees for temples.
  • Comfortable walking shoes, plus broken-in boots if you’re trekking.
  • Power adapter: Nepal uses 230 V with type C, D and M sockets; a universal adapter is easiest.
  • Headtorch, sunscreen, sunglasses and a reusable water bottle.
  • Copies of your passport and insurance, plus spare passport photos for SIM cards and permits.

Trekking? Use our full trekking packing list.

Local Customs and Etiquette

Respectful travel in Nepal

  • Greet with “Namaste” and your palms pressed together.
  • Walk clockwise around stupas, prayer wheels and mani walls.
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and temples, and ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Use your right hand to give, receive and eat.
  • Avoid public displays of affection and don’t touch people’s heads.
  • Time zone: Nepal is UTC+5:45.
