Thamel, Kathmandu: Complete Travel Guide 2026

Everything you need to know about Thamel, Kathmandu's famous traveller quarter: what to do, where to eat and shop, nightlife, where to stay, how to get there from the airport, and safety tips — from our team in Kathmandu.

About Thamel

Kathmandu's lively traveller hub

Thamel is the most popular area for visitors in Kathmandu — a maze of narrow streets packed with hotels, guesthouses, cafes, restaurants, bars, trekking-gear shops, bookshops, money exchangers and travel agencies. It has been the heart of Nepal’s backpacker and trekking scene for decades, and today it suits every budget, from simple guesthouses to boutique hotels.

Thamel sits just north of the old city, about 6–7 km from Kathmandu airport and a 20–25 minute walk from Kathmandu Durbar Square. Many travellers base themselves here before and after treks to Everest or Annapurna.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, trekkers, solo travellers, food and nightlife.
  • Main streets and squares: Thamel Chowk, JP Marg, Chaksibari Marg, Jyatha, Paknajol and Chhetrapati.

Best Things to Do in Thamel

Sights and experiences in and around the area

  • Garden of Dreams — a restored neo-classical garden on the edge of Thamel, a calm escape for coffee, reading and photos. Small entry fee.
  • Kathesimbhu Stupa — a beautiful small stupa hidden in a courtyard just south of Thamel, often described as a mini Swayambhunath.
  • Walk the old bazaars — head south through Asan and Indra Chowk, full of temples, spice stalls and everyday Kathmandu life, to Kathmandu Durbar Square.
  • Shop for trekking gear — buy or rent down jackets, sleeping bags, poles and boots before your trek.
  • Take a cooking class — learn to make momos, dal bhat and Newari dishes.
  • Enjoy a massage or spa — popular after long treks.
  • Join a yoga or meditation class — several studios run drop-in sessions.
  • Use Thamel as a base — easy access to Swayambhunath (about 15 minutes by taxi), Boudhanath, Pashupatinath and day trips across the valley.

Food & Restaurants in Thamel

What and where to eat

  • Nepali & Newari: momos, dal bhat sets, thukpa and Newari dishes such as bara and choila.
  • Thakali sets: hearty set meals from the Annapurna region, served in many Thamel restaurants.
  • Tibetan: thenthuk, shapale and butter tea.
  • International: bakeries, coffee shops, rooftop restaurants and menus from Italian and Mexican to Korean, Israeli and Indian.
  • Rooftop dining: many restaurants have terraces with views over the city — lovely at sunset.

Tip: drink only bottled, boiled or filtered water, and choose busy restaurants with high turnover.

Thamel Nightlife

Live music, bars and evenings out

  • Live music bars — rock, reggae and Nepali bands play most evenings, especially around Thamel Chowk and JP Marg.
  • Rooftop bars and lounges — relaxed spots for sunset drinks.
  • Cultural dinner shows — traditional Nepali music and dance with a set meal.
  • Clubs — a handful of late-night venues, busiest at weekends and in peak season.

Most bars close relatively early by international standards. Use a registered taxi or pre-booked car late at night, and keep an eye on your drinks and belongings.

Shopping in Thamel

What to buy and how to bargain

  • Trekking gear — jackets, fleeces, sleeping bags, poles and rentals. Quality varies, so check stitching, zips and down fill carefully.
  • Handicrafts — singing bowls, prayer flags, thangka paintings, wooden masks and Tibetan jewellery.
  • Pashmina and textiles — scarves, shawls and felt products.
  • Tea, spices and handmade paper — easy, light souvenirs.
  • Books and maps — secondhand bookshops and trekking maps.

Bargaining: polite bargaining is normal in markets and small shops, but not in fixed-price stores or restaurants.

Where to Stay in Thamel

Choosing the right part of Thamel

  • Central Thamel — right in the action, close to restaurants and shops; can be noisy at night.
  • Paknajol and northern Thamel — a little quieter, with good mid-range hotels.
  • Jyatha and Chhetrapati — more local atmosphere and closer to the old city.
  • Edges near Lazimpat — calmer streets and upscale options, still walkable to Thamel.

Ask for a room away from the street if you are a light sleeper. Find hotels in Thamel →

Getting to & Around Thamel

From the airport and around the city

  • From the airport: about 6–7 km, roughly 30 minutes by car outside rush hour. Book our fixed-price Kathmandu airport to Thamel transfer — your driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign and tracks your flight.
  • Around Thamel: walking is best; many inner lanes are narrow and busy.
  • Sightseeing by car: hire our private taxi with driver by the hour to visit Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Bhaktapur.
  • Onward travel: tourist buses to Pokhara and Chitwan leave from near Thamel early each morning.

Thamel Travel Tips
