Overview

One day in Pokhara is enough to see why so many travellers fall in love with it: sunrise over the Annapurna range from Sarangkot, a waterfall that disappears into the ground, a rowing boat to an island temple on Phewa Lake, and sunset from the World Peace Pagoda with the whole valley below you. It’s also the perfect day to add before or after the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, which starts just outside the city.

How this 1-day Pokhara itinerary works

Pokhara is small and relaxed, so the route is easy: mountains at dawn, caves and waterfalls in the late morning, lunch by the lake, and the lake itself in the afternoon. You finish on the hill opposite Lakeside for sunset, then walk or boat back for dinner. If you want an adrenaline hit, slot a tandem paragliding flight from Sarangkot into the morning.

What you will see in one day

  • Sarangkot (about 1,600 m): the classic sunrise viewpoint for Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri.
  • Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave: a waterfall that plunges into an underground tunnel, and a sacred cave right opposite where you can see it from below.
  • Phewa Lake and Tal Barahi Temple: a rowing boat to the small island temple in the middle of Pokhara’s famous lake.
  • World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa): a white stupa on the hill above the lake with the best sunset view in town.
  • Lakeside: cafés, bookshops and lakeside restaurants for a relaxed evening.

Who this itinerary suits

It suits first-time visitors, families and anyone with one day in Pokhara before or after a trek. Walking is light, apart from a 30–45 minute climb to the Peace Pagoda (you can also drive up). Pair it with 1 day in Kathmandu, 2 days in Kathmandu or 3 days in Kathmandu for a complete first trip to Nepal, or read our full Pokhara travel guide. Staying longer? Our 2 days in Pokhara itinerary adds paragliding, the Mountain Museum, the old town and Begnas Lake.

Before you go

Pokhara is about 25 minutes by air or 6–8 hours by road from Kathmandu. Mountain views are clearest from October to April and early in the morning, so set an alarm. Carry small notes for entry tickets and boat hire (see money in Nepal), and buy a local SIM in Kathmandu so you can call taxis (see our SIM card guide). For general safety tips, see Is Nepal safe?.

Getting around

Lakeside is walkable. For Sarangkot at dawn and the caves and waterfalls, hire a taxi for the morning; agree the price the evening before with your hotel. Boats on Phewa Lake are hired by the hour from the boat stations along Lakeside, with fixed prices posted at the counter.

1 Day plan

🗓 1 Day✨ Nature & Views📍 Pokhara📍 Nepal

One Perfect Day: Sunrise, Lake and Sunset

Mountains at dawn from Sarangkot, Pokhara's waterfall and caves, a boat across Phewa Lake and sunset at the World Peace Pagoda.

  1. Early morning

    Sunrise at Sarangkot

Leave Lakeside at about 5:00 and drive 30–40 minutes up to Sarangkot (around 1,600 m), then climb the last few minutes of steps to the viewing tower. As the sky turns pink, Machhapuchhre (6,993 m), Annapurna South, Annapurna I (8,091 m) and Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) light up one by one, with Phewa Lake and Pokhara still in shadow below. Stay for tea at one of the hilltop cafés before heading down.

💡 Tip: Bring a warm jacket: it is cold before sunrise even when the day will be hot.
🎟️ Book this part of your day
  2. Morning

    Breakfast in Lakeside (or paragliding)

Back in Lakeside by about 8:00 for breakfast by the water. If you want to fly, this is the time: tandem paragliding flights take off from Sarangkot in the late morning when the thermals start, with 20–30 minutes in the air over the lake and landing on the shore. Book the day before; flights depend on the weather.

💡 Tip: Paragliding needs clear, stable weather. If it is cancelled, keep the afternoon free to try again.
  3. Morning (late)

Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave

Take a short taxi ride south to Davis Falls (Patale Chhango), where the Pardi Khola river crashes into a narrow gorge and vanishes underground. It is most dramatic after the monsoon, from September to November. Cross the road to Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave, a sacred Hindu cave with a shrine to Shiva; follow the wet steps to the back to see the waterfall pouring through the rock above you.

💡 Tip: The cave floor is slippery. Wear shoes with grip and bring a light jacket for the spray.
  4. Afternoon

Lunch, then a boat to Tal Barahi Temple

Head back to Lakeside for lunch: try a Thakali set (dal bhat with buckwheat, greens and pickles) or fresh fish from the lake. Then hire a rowing boat from one of the boat stations and paddle out to Tal Barahi, the two-tiered pagoda temple on its own island in the middle of Phewa Lake. On a clear day, Machhapuchhre is reflected in the water behind you.

💡 Tip: Take a boat with a boatman if you want to relax, or row yourself for a cheaper ride. Life jackets are provided; wear one.
  5. Evening

Sunset at the World Peace Pagoda and dinner in Lakeside

Ask your boatman to drop you on the far shore at the foot of the hill, then climb 30–45 minutes through forest to the World Peace Pagoda (Shanti Stupa). The white stupa looks over the whole of Phewa Lake, Pokhara and, on clear evenings, the Annapurna range turning gold. Walk back down to the boat, or take a taxi down the road on the other side, and finish with dinner and live music in Lakeside.

Starting a trek tomorrow? This is a good evening to check your gear and meet your guide for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

💡 Tip: Leave the pagoda soon after sunset so you are off the forest trail before it gets dark, or arrange a taxi to collect you.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Pokhara?

One day is enough for the highlights: sunrise at Sarangkot, Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave, a boat on Phewa Lake and sunset at the World Peace Pagoda. With two or three days you can add paragliding, Begnas Lake, the International Mountain Museum or a short hike.

What is the best thing to do in Pokhara in one day?

Watch sunrise over the Annapurna range from Sarangkot, then take a boat across Phewa Lake to Tal Barahi Temple and climb to the World Peace Pagoda for sunset.

What time is sunrise at Sarangkot?

Roughly 5:45–6:45 depending on the season. Leave Lakeside about an hour before sunrise to reach the viewpoint in time.

Can I see the Himalayas from Pokhara?

Yes. On clear days Machhapuchhre, Annapurna I, Annapurna South and Dhaulagiri are visible from Sarangkot, the Peace Pagoda and even Lakeside. Views are best from October to April and early in the morning.

How much does one day in Pokhara cost?

About USD 30–80 per person without paragliding: entry tickets, boat hire, a morning taxi and meals. Tandem paragliding adds roughly USD 75–110.

Is paragliding in Pokhara safe?

Pokhara is one of the world's best-known paragliding sites. Fly with a licensed company and an experienced tandem pilot, and only in good weather. Flights are cancelled when conditions are unsafe.

How do I get from Kathmandu to Pokhara?

Fly in about 25 minutes to Pokhara International Airport, or drive 6–8 hours by private car or tourist bus. Flying saves a full day.

Can I do this before the Annapurna Base Camp trek?

Yes. Pokhara is the starting point for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. A relaxed day here helps you recover from the journey from Kathmandu before you start walking.
