Nepal’s mountain roads are narrow and winding, traffic in Kathmandu is busy and unpredictable, and local drivers know the routes, road conditions and parking. A driver also saves you navigating, finding parking and dealing with permits or checkpoints.
Self-drive options exist, but they need a valid licence accepted in Nepal and confident experience of very challenging driving conditions. For safety and convenience we recommend a private car with an experienced local driver.
