Basantapur, Kathmandu: Area Guide 2026

A local guide to Basantapur, the historic heart of old Kathmandu around Basantapur Durbar Square: what to see, Freak Street, food, shopping, where to stay and how to get there.

About Basantapur

The historic centre of old Kathmandu

Basantapur is the area around the southern end of Kathmandu Durbar Square, which is why the square is often called Basantapur Durbar Square. Its open plaza, the old Basantapur Tower and the surrounding streets form the historic core of the old Kathmandu kingdom.

Today Basantapur mixes centuries-old temples and palaces with handicraft stalls, rooftop cafes, budget guesthouses and everyday local life. It is a short walk from Thamel through the old bazaars, and one of the best places in Kathmandu to feel the city’s history.

What to See in Basantapur

Highlights in and around the square

  • Kathmandu Durbar Square — the UNESCO-listed royal square with Hanuman Dhoka Palace, Taleju Temple and Kasthamandap. See our full guide for entry fees and history.
  • Basantapur Tower (Nautalle Durbar) — the nine-storey palace tower overlooking the plaza.
  • Kumari Ghar — the home of the Kumari, Nepal’s Living Goddess, on the edge of the square.
  • Basantapur Square — the open plaza where vendors sell handicrafts and locals gather in the evening.
  • Freak Street (Jhochhen) — the famous 1960s–70s hippie street, now lined with cafes, guesthouses and souvenir shops.
  • Indra Chowk & Asan — busy old market squares with temples, spices, textiles and brassware, on the walk to Thamel.

Food, Cafes & Shopping

Eat and shop like a local

  • Rooftop cafes — several cafes around the square have terraces with views over the temple roofs, perfect for tea at sunset.
  • Newari food — try bara (lentil patties), chatamari (rice crepe), choila (spiced grilled meat) and yomari (sweet dumpling) in local eateries.
  • Street snacks — momos, sel roti and samosas from small shops in the lanes.
  • Handicrafts — singing bowls, masks, jewellery and souvenirs at the Basantapur stalls; bargain politely.
  • Old bazaars — spices, fabrics and kitchenware in Asan and Indra Chowk.

Festivals in Basantapur

When the old city comes alive

  • Indra Jatra — the city’s biggest street festival, usually in late summer, when the Kumari is pulled through the streets on a chariot and masked dances fill the square.
  • Dashain — Nepal’s largest festival in autumn; the Taleju Temple opens to the public on one day only.
  • Everyday life — morning offerings at the temples and evening gatherings on the temple steps.

Festival days are spectacular but crowded — keep your belongings close.

Getting to Basantapur

From Thamel, the airport and around the city

  • From Thamel: about 20–25 minutes on foot through Asan and Indra Chowk, or a short taxi ride.
  • From the airport: book our fixed-price Kathmandu airport transfer — Basantapur and Kathmandu Durbar Square are available as drop-off points.
  • Private car with driver: combine Basantapur with Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and Boudhanath in one day using our private taxi in Kathmandu.
  • On foot: the area around the square is best explored walking; cars stop at the edge.

Staying in Basantapur & Tips

Is it a good base?

  • Stay here for: history on your doorstep, early-morning temple life and budget or heritage guesthouses around Freak Street.
  • Consider Thamel for: more hotels, restaurants and nightlife — still within walking distance.
  • Dress modestly around temples and remove shoes where asked.
  • Do not photograph the Kumari, and ask before photographing people.
  • Carry cash for entry tickets and small shops.
