Annapurna Region Travel & Trekking Guide 2026

Everything you need to plan a trip to Nepal's Annapurna region: the best treks, villages and viewpoints, the mountains you will see, permits, seasons and how to get there from Pokhara — from our team in Nepal.

About the Annapurna Region

Nepal's most varied trekking region

The Annapurna region lies in central Nepal, north of Pokhara. Much of it is protected within the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s largest protected area, which stretches from subtropical rice terraces and rhododendron forests to the high, dry Tibetan-style valleys of Manang and Mustang.

The region is crowned by Annapurna I (8,091 m) — the first 8,000 m peak ever climbed, in 1950 — along with Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. Between the two 8,000 m giants of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri runs the Kali Gandaki gorge, one of the deepest gorges in the world.

It is also a region of rich culture: Gurung and Magar villages in the south, and Thakali, Manangi and Tibetan Buddhist communities in the north. Teahouses line all the main trails, making it ideal for everyone from first-time trekkers to experienced adventurers.

Best Treks in the Annapurna Region

From 4-day sunrise treks to the full circuit

  1. Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek — 7–12 days · max 4,130 m · moderate. Through Ghandruk, Chhomrong and the Modi Khola valley into a 360° sanctuary of peaks.
  2. Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek — 4–5 days · max 3,210 m · easy to moderate. The best short trek in Nepal, with a famous sunrise over Dhaulagiri and Annapurna.
  3. Annapurna Circuit — 12–18 days · max 5,416 m (Thorong La) · challenging. A classic loop from green valleys over a high pass to Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki.
  4. Mardi Himal Trek — 5–7 days · max about 4,500 m · moderate. A quieter ridge trail with close-up views of Machhapuchhre.
  5. Khopra Ridge Trek — 7–9 days · max about 3,660 m · moderate. Community lodges and huge views of Dhaulagiri, away from the crowds.
  6. Tilicho Lake Trek — a side trip from the Annapurna Circuit to one of the world’s highest lakes, at about 4,919 m.
  7. Upper Mustang & Nar Phu — restricted-area treks in remote, Tibetan-influenced valleys (special permits required).

Top Places to Visit in the Annapurna Region

  • Machhapuchhre Base Camp — the last stop before ABC, at the foot of the sacred Fishtail peak.
  • Poon Hill — 3,210 m, one of the best sunrise viewpoints in the Himalaya.
  • Ghandruk — a beautiful stone-built Gurung village with a cultural museum and Annapurna South views.

  • Jhinu Danda — natural hot springs by the river, perfect after a trek.

Mountains You Can See

The peaks of the Annapurna range

  • Dhaulagiri I — about 8,167 m, the world’s seventh highest mountain.
  • Annapurna I — 8,091 m, the world’s tenth highest and the first 8,000 m peak climbed.
  • Gangapurna — about 7,455 m, above Manang.
  • Annapurna South — about 7,219 m, the great peak above Ghandruk and ABC.
  • Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) — about 6,993 m, sacred and closed to climbing, Pokhara’s iconic mountain.
  • Hiunchuli and Nilgiri — striking peaks seen from Poon Hill and the Kali Gandaki.

How to Get to the Annapurna Region

Pokhara is your gateway

  • To Pokhara: about 25 minutes by plane from Kathmandu, or roughly 6–8 hours by tourist bus or private car.
  • To the trailheads: most treks start a 1–3 hour drive from Pokhara — Nayapul or Ghandruk road-heads for ABC and Poon Hill, Kande for Mardi Himal, and Besisahar for the Annapurna Circuit.
  • Jomsom: reached by a short mountain flight from Pokhara or a long jeep ride, for Muktinath and Mustang.
  • Roads: new roads now reach many villages, so jeeps can shorten treks — good guides choose routes that stay on footpaths where possible.

Best Time to Visit the Annapurna Region

Seasons for trekking

  • October–November (best): clear skies and the best mountain views after the monsoon.
  • March–May: warm days and the region’s famous rhododendron forests in full bloom.
  • December–February: cold but clear — great for lower treks such as Poon Hill; Thorong La may close after heavy snow, and avalanche risk rises near ABC.
  • June–September (monsoon): wet, leechy and cloudy in the south, but the rain-shadow areas of Upper Mustang and the upper Annapurna Circuit stay much drier.

Permits, Guides & Altitude

What you need to know before you go

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors, required for all treks in the region.
  • Restricted areas (Upper Mustang, Nar Phu, parts of Manaslu): special permits issued only through a registered agency.
  • Licensed guide: now required on most trekking routes in Nepal’s conservation areas. All InTicketo treks include a licensed guide and the permits listed on each trip page.
  • Altitude: ABC (4,130 m) and especially Thorong La (5,416 m) need gradual ascent and acclimatisation. Tell your guide about headaches, nausea or breathlessness.
  • Insurance: choose a policy that covers trekking to your maximum altitude and helicopter evacuation.
