The photos online don't do it justice. The mountains look big in photos — in person they are incomprehensibly enormous. You feel genuinely small among them but in the best possible way. Day 5 to Tengboche with Ama Dablam right there — I literally gasped. Guide Tenzing was patient and knowledgeable, the tea house owners warm and welcoming. Then Kala Patthar at 4am in every layer I owned. Perfect.

This was a birthday gift from my husband and it was perfect in every way. Guide Lakpa was wonderful with our mixed group. The tea house food was much better than expected — dal bhat, garlic soup, apple pies in Namche. What I wasn't ready for was how culturally moving the whole experience would be. The Tengboche Monastery, the memorial at Thukla, the prayer flags at Base Camp. A deeply beautiful journey.

Everything was exactly as described — and then more. The mountains are more dramatic than the photos. The Sherpa culture is more fascinating than the guidebooks. The tea houses are more comfortable than expected up to Namche. The altitude is more challenging than the training. And the sunrise from Kala Patthar is more beautiful than anything I have ever imagined. Guide Tenzing was exceptional in every dimension.

I live in Colorado so I have some altitude experience — but 5,555m is something entirely different. The Khumbu Glacier moraine on Day 9 is tough. Kala Patthar at 4am in the cold is tough. But the guides are there for every difficult step and the payoff is quite literally the greatest view on Earth. I've already convinced three friends to book this trek since getting home. Best birthday of my life, no question. The trek was beautifully organized, perfectly paced, and the mountain views were more spectacular than any photograph I'd ever seen.
